چکیده

The Gale-Shapley “propose/reject” algorithm is a wellknown procedure for solving the classical stable marriage problem. In this paper we study this algorithm in the context of the many-to-many stable marriage problem, also known as the stable allocation or ordinal transportation problem. We present an integral variant of the GaleShapley algorithm that provides a direct analog, in the context of “ordinal” assignment problems, of a well-known bicriteria approximation algorithm of Shmoys and Tardos for scheduling on unrelated parallel machines with costs. If we are assigning, say, jobs to machines, our algorithm finds an unsplit (non-preemptive) stable assignment where every job is assigned at least as well as it could be in any fractional stable assignment, and where each machine is congested by at most the processing time of the largest job.

Improved Algorithmic Results for Unsplittable Stable Allocation Problems

The stable allocation problem is a many-to-many generalization of the well-known stable marriage problem, where we seek a bipartite assignment between, say, jobs (of varying sizes) and machines (of varying capacities) that is “stable” based on a set of underlying preference lists submitted by the jobs and machines. Building on the initial work of [6], we study a natural “unsplittable” variant o...

A Simulated Annealing Algorithm for Unsplittable Capacitated Network Design

The Network Design Problem (NDP) is one of the important problems in combinatorial optimization. Among the network design problems, the Multicommodity Capacitated Network Design (MCND) problem has numerous applications in transportation, logistics, telecommunication, and production systems. The MCND problems with splittable flow variables are NP-hard, which means they require exponential time t...

The stable marriage problem with restricted pairs

A stable matching is a complete matching of men and women such that no man and woman who are not partners both prefer each other to their actual partners under the matching. In an instance of the STABLE MARRIAGE problem, each of the n men and n women ranks the members of the opposite sex in order of preference. It is well known that at least one stable matching exists for every STABLE MARRIAGE ...

Balanced Stable Marriage: How Close is Close Enough?

The Balanced Stable Marriage problem is a central optimization version of the classic Stable Marriage problem. Here, the output cannot be an arbitrary stable matching, but one that balances between the dissatisfaction of the two parties, men and women. We study Balanced Stable Marriage from the viewpoint of Parameterized Complexity. Our “above guarantee parameterizations” are arguably the most ...

Manipulation and gender neutrality in stable marriage procedures

The stable marriage problem is a well-known problem of matching men to women so that no man and woman who are not married to each other both prefer each other. Such a problem has a wide variety of practical applications ranging from matching resident doctors to hospitals to matching students to schools. A well-known algorithm to solve this problem is the Gale-Shapley algorithm, which runs in po...
